Creating a text outline

1. Create a new image.

2. Use the Paint Bucket tool (Shift+G) to fill in the background with the color you want for the outline of the text. I chose rose pink for mine.

3. Next, choose a color for the text and click on the Text tool (T). Type in the word(s) you want. I typed “illuminaire” in white font.

4. Make sure you have the text layer selected in the layer palette. Click on the “Select regions by color” tool (Shift+Ctrl+C) and then click directly on the word(s) to select them.

5. Now go to the Select menu and click on Expand. Type in the number of pixels you want to expand it by. I usually go with 4 or 5 for a banner and 1 or 2 for tiny text.

6. Go to the Layer menu and select Merge visible. On the Layers Merge Options menu, select “Expanded as necessary” and click OK.

7. Click on the Edit menu, Copy, and Paste as new to see your text outline. Or Paste into a new layer on an image like a banner. And voila! You have a text outline =)
