New Moon madness

new-moon-madness

I’m sure everyone in the world knows by now that the latest movie installment in the Twilight series, New Moon, raked in $72.7 million on opening day, breaking the record from last year by The Dark Knight. How many of those were fangirls who waited for the midnight premiere, braving the cold and wet? I’ll admit that I am a Twilight fan, but I can wait a little bit for the craziness to die down. Those rabid fans scare me. Do I want to see the movie? Yes, even though I dislike New Moon out of all the books in the series (although Breaking Dawn is a very close second for the godawful name Stephenie …

Let’s do the hamster dance!

lets-do-the-hamster-dance

Or not. Does anyone even remember what the Hampster Dance is? Man, this makes me feel old 0_0 Seriously though, have you heard about the hottest toy for Christmas this year? They’re something called Zhu Zhu pets, little toy hamsters that can move and squeak around without all the noisiness, smell, and poop that accompanies a real hamster. Funnily enough, they’re named after the Chinese word for pig, “zhu.” As the New York Times put it:
They’re zero-maintenance artificial hamsters and they do not stink, chew electric wires, or run around their cages making noise at night.
Stores are having trouble keeping them on the shelves (reminds me of the Talking Elmo craze a few years back) …

The hypocrisy of pro-life groups

RE: Kan. abortion doc killed in church; suspect held
Funny how the pro-life movement is all about how fetuses have a right to life, but they can go and shoot people and bomb clinics, injuring innocent bystanders in the process. How is murdering an abortion doctor any better than aborting a baby? Isn’t a life lost in both cases, according to pro-life groups’ definition of a life? Dr. Tiller had a right to live, too, and the shooter took that right away from him, in the middle of a church, of all places. How does that make the pro-life movement any better than the pro-choice groups that it looks down on? It’s just downright hypocritical. Yes, …

Nadya Suleman aka “Octomom”

So I wrote this back in February 2009 and only now got around to posting it. My thoughts remain the same on this issue, though. Makes me curious about what she’s up to these days, almost three months later, now that most of the babies are home with her. No doubt that we’ll be hearing about her in the news again sometime soon…
P.S. Did anyone hear about her actually filing an application to trademark the name “Octomom”? Seriously?!

I’m sure by now everyone has heard of Nadya Suleman and her miraculous eight bouncing bundles of joy. When the news first broke, I thought to myself, huh, that’s kind of cool, but it wasn’t really something that …

The slow demise of bookstores :(

I was reading an article, Bargain Hunting for Books, and Feeling Sheepish About It, at New York Times today and it made me sad. According to the piece, bookstores are slowly losing revenue and some are even closing due to the easy of buying and reselling books online.
“In other words, its all the fault of people like myself, who increasingly use the Internet both to buy books and later, after their value to us is gone, sell them.”
In some ways, the Internet has made it easier to read more books, making lesser known and rarer books available, especially the classics and out-of-print books that are now hard to find in some stores. On the other …
